Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore

The Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore is an ancient institution, founded by the Florentine Republic in 1296 to supervise the construction of the Cathedral.
Over the centuries, the Opera worked to conserve and enhance the monuments in Piazza Duomo (Cathedral Square), the great open-air museum that symbolises Florence throughout the world: the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Brunelleschi's Dome, the Crypt of Santa Reparata, the Baptistery of San Giovanni, Giotto's bell tower and the Museo dell'Opera.

The museum contains numerous masterpieces from these monuments: sculptures by Donatello and Arnolfo di Cambio, a Pietà by Michelangelo, the original panels of the Porta del Paradiso (Gates of Paradise) in the Baptistery, by Lorenzo Ghiberti, and those of Andrea Pisano for the bell tower, as well as many others works by Luca della Robbia, Antonio Pollaiolo and Verrocchio.
The museum has recently been renovated and was reopened to the public in 2015; inside, it is now possible to admire a reconstruction of the facade of Santa Maria del Fiore based on the first design by Arnolfo di Cambio, opposite the doors and statues of the baptistery.
