Torre Grossa

The Torre Grossa is the tallest tower in the town and is 54 metres high. The works began in 1300, during the period in which Dante Alighieri was staying in the little town, and ended eleven years later. Today, it is still one of the best preserved towers: like all the San Gimignano towers, it has a base and face cut into regular-shaped bosses. It stands in Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square), next to the Palazzo Comunale (Municipal Building), and is one of the few that can be visited, by purchasing a ticket for the Civic Museum. When you reach the top, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the historic town centre and the Tuscan landscape, while inside you can see the spectacular 3D video "Medieval Vertigo".
